At Al Furqan School, we believe that Design Technology prepares children to deal with tomorrows rapidly changing world. It encourages children to become independent, creative problem solvers and thinkers as individuals and part of a team.
Through the study of Design and Technology, we enable children to gain experience designing, making and evaluating a range of products that solve real and relevant problems.
High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and of any society.
The National Curriculum for design and technology aims to ensure that all pupils:
•develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
•build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
•critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
•understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
We follow the Expressive Arts and Design programme from the Statutory Framework for EYFS and the National Curriculum Design and Technology programme in KS1 and KS2. This is supplemented by the DT Association (namely ‘Projects on a Page’) to inform both teaching and learning.
The very nature of design technology encourages children to draw upon other disciplines including mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art to develop a broad range of subject knowledge. Our children gain experience working within 5 strands of design and technology: structures, mechanical systems, food and nutrition, electrical systems and textiles. We aim to guide children through a process of iterative design where they are able to test, evaluate and improve their designs as they go.
